While the shooting was in progress, one of the students had called 911 using their cell phone. Thirty-three police officers descended on the high school, along with emergency crews from four fire departments. They located Lane near his parked car, where they arrested him without incident.

Charges, Competency, and Sentencing

On March 1, 2012, Lane was charged with three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated murder, and one count of felonious assault. He did not enter a plea and was arraigned on March 6. He had three defense attorneys representing him. By the judge’s decision, Lane would not be tried until he was evaluated for competency. They scheduled another hearing to determine if he would be tried as an adult or juvenile.
